BIM can support different stages of an asset's lifecycle. A digital twin connects that information to physical-world observations and update processes appropriate to its intended use.
The role of BIM information
BIM models organize geometry, properties and relationships between components. During construction, they support project consultation and coordination. Their content still needs maintenance and validation to reflect what has actually been built.
Reality adds observations
Photos and surveys record visible conditions at the time of capture. Connecting them to project information and field records gives teams a basis for examining changes and investigating differences.
Comparison requires criteria
Overlaying two representations does not, on its own, establish a nonconformity. Analysis requires suitable scale, alignment, tolerances and coverage, as well as a responsible technical reviewer.
Start with the team's question
Define what must be answered: where work advanced, which revision applies or which issue remains open. That question should determine the capture frequency and pilot deliverables.
From reference to application
Geminarium aims to connect engineering information with construction records. It is intended to complement BIM by bringing design, reality and review into the same context.
